Este Tea: A New Chapter in Barrio Logan's Culinary Landscape
In the vibrant heart of Barrio Logan, the local tea company Este has taken a pivotal step towards establishing a permanent presence by opening at The Woo. Founded by Allyson and Josue, Este celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Japanese teas, offering a diverse selection of loose leaf teas, herbal brews, and matcha delicacies.
Having operated pop-ups since 2024, they soon realized the limitations of this business model. "We wanted a consistent home that could still flex for different kinds of gatherings," explains Allyson. Their ambition is not just to serve tea, but to create a space for cultural exchange, blending Japanese tea traditions with Filipino and Salvadoran sweets—an initiative that speaks volumes about their vision.
A Collaborative Jewel: The Woo
The Woo, which opened late in 2025, is designed to foster creativity and community among artists and local businesses. Este’s collaboration with The Woo aligns perfectly with the shared mission: to enhance the cultural fabric of San Diego. Tony Salamone and David Garcia, the founders of The Woo, recognize Este not just as a vendor, but as artists bringing intention and craftsmanship to their craft.
The Menus: Beyond Just Matcha
The diverse menu offered by Este includes a range of Japanese teas such as sencha and genmaicha, along with various caffeine-free herbal options. Although matcha is a popular item, Allyson emphasizes, "Despite what people might think, we are not a matcha company." This statement highlights their commitment to offering a comprehensive tea experience.
Future Horizons: Expanding the Experience
Initially operating on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Este has plans for evening events that will enhance community engagement. Josue notes, "Our goal is to continue enabling the space and bring additional third-space options for people." With a focus on cultural experiences and community gatherings, Este is poised to become an invaluable resource for tea lovers and cultural explorers alike.
A Rich Culture in Barrio Logan
As Barrio Logan continues to evolve, the addition of Este adds a new layer to its already rich cultural landscape. "We’re only a couple blocks away from the busier streets of the neighborhood, so we’re excited to activate our corner in a new way," says Salamone. This sentiment encapsulates the essence of collaboration and community that characterizes The Woo.
Este Tea at The Woo opens its doors to both locals and visitors alike. With its dedication to cultural exchange and quality offerings, it's a space designed not just for tea, but for conversation and connection.
