Experience Cultural Pride at Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys' 'Giants' Exhibition

Stylish couple at Giants exhibition by Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys, colorful setting.

Big Art Comes to La Jolla: Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys’ Giants Exhibition

This spring, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) is set to host a groundbreaking art exhibition that celebrates the immense contributions of Black artists across generations. From April 18 until August 9, 2026, the gallery will showcase the expansive "Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys," a collection that highlights over 130 art pieces from the personal collection of music power couple Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) and Alicia Keys.

Highlighting Cultural Narratives Through Art

This exhibit, which marks the first display of Dean Collection artwork in San Diego, was organized by the Brooklyn Museum and aims to amplify the artistry and narratives embedded in Black culture. Featuring the work of 37 Black American and diasporic artists, the collection invites viewers to appreciate art that tackles themes of identity, joy, resistance, and cultural pride.

As Amy Crum, Associate Curator at MCASD, states, this exhibition allows the museum to engage in meaningful dialogues regarding Black joy and resistance: “Giants offers an exciting opportunity for MCASD to participate more meaningfully in crucial dialogues about Black joy, resistance, and cultural identity in contemporary art.”

Embracing an Intertwined History

At its core, the exhibition is divided into three thematic sections. The first part, "Becoming Giants," tells the story of the couple’s personal artistic journeys. This section includes sentimental artifacts such as BMX bikes that reflect Dean's childhood and a piano that symbolizes Keys' early career. Their backgrounds in music not only inform their collection but also serve as a narrative vehicle, emphasizing the cultural connections between music and visual expression.

Additionally, the second section titled "On the Shoulders of Giants" pays homage to past artists whose works have paved the way for contemporary creators. By including significant contributions from historical figures like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Gordon Parks, the exhibition draws a direct line between the past and present, creating a richer context for appreciating current artworks.

Exploration of the Interactive and Emotional Experience

The final section, "Giant Presence," emphasizes scale and depth, presenting monumental works that provoke thought and discussion. It not only showcases large physical artworks but also integrates an immersive soundtrack featuring Marvin Gaye to enhance the viewer's experience. This approach underscores a unique aspect of the exhibition: the blending of various art forms to create a cohesive dialogue centered around cultural identity.

A Call to Engage with Art as a Reflection of Society

As the Dean couple puts it, the collection philosophy is "by the artists, for the artists, with the people." This sentiment resonates through every piece showcased in the exhibition, inviting audiences to forge personal connections with the works on display. The exhibition goes beyond merely showcasing art; it aims to elicit emotional and intellectual responses from visitors, making it a significant cultural event in San Diego.

For those in La Jolla and beyond, attending the "Giants" exhibition will not only be an opportunity to see exceptional artworks but also a chance to engage in a broader conversation about cultural representation and the vital energy that Black creativity brings to contemporary society. The emphasis on joy and resistance provides a timely reminder of the power of art as a medium of expression and connection.

Experience Giants – Don’t Miss Out!

Mark your calendars and prepare for a transformative experience at the MCASD. Whether you are an art aficionado or new to the art scene, the "Giants" exhibition promises to engage and inspire. Discover how art uniquely bridges personal and societal narratives, encouraging dialogue and fostering greater cultural appreciation.

Discover How Gemma Matsuyama McMastered Mochi from Michelin Kitchens

Update A Culinary Journey From Michelin to Mochi Gemma Matsuyama Yamada's journey is a rich tapestry woven between cultures — from the kitchens of Michelin-starred restaurants to her own innovative dessert brand, Kimochi. With a Japanese father and an Italian mother, Gemma grew up in a multicultural environment that instilled a deep appreciation for diverse culinary traditions. Her story embodies how the culinary world is increasingly embracing fusion as chefs explore their identities through food. From Italy to Influential Kitchens Gemma's culinary path began when she left her all-girls Catholic high school in New Jersey to attend the prestigious culinary school, Istituto Alberghiero di Villa Santa Maria, in Italy's Abruzzo region, known for its historical ties to cuisine dating back to the 16th century. After five influential years learning Italian culinary techniques, she transferred her skills to New York City, where she honed her craft in various bakeries and restaurants, ultimately shining as the pastry sous chef at Blue Hill at Stone Barns—a recognized leader in the farm-to-table movement. Turning Passion into Entrepreneurship In the vibrant culinary landscape of Los Angeles, Gemma’s star continued to rise as the pastry chef for n/naka, an establishment that proudly holds a Michelin star. However, the culinary landscape shifted drastically when the pandemic struck. Rather than succumbing to the challenges, Gemma embraced the entrepreneurial spirit she had tasted through her food truck endeavors. During a time when many faced uncertainty, she channeled her creativity into making fruit mochi—a traditional Japanese treat—during late-night kitchen experiments in her apartment. Following her passion, she launched Kimochi, introducing her customers to a unique dessert experience that highlights seasonal fruits wrapped in her handmade mochi. Kimochi: A Sweet Innovation At Kimochi, Gemma focuses on using fresh, locally-sourced fruits, embracing produce from Southern California’s flourishing agricultural scene. Flavors such as mango, strawberry, and clementine have become crowd favorites, while she dreams of resurrecting her cake-inspired creations. The brand's ethos is a reflection of her philosophy—encouraging individuals to savor life’s small pleasures, which is embodied in the name 'Kimochi.' In Japanese, 'Ki' represents energy, while 'mochi' signifies a firm hold, creating a beautiful play on embracing life’s moments and sharing them with loved ones. Breaking Barriers Through Food Gemma’s story not only emphasizes culinary excellence but also resonates with broader themes of cultural appreciation and resilience in the face of adversity. Her work highlights the importance of storytelling through food, showcasing how culinary traditions can serve as bridges across cultures. In a recent interview, she underscored how vital it is to connect with others and support one another through shared experiences, particularly amidst growing concerns of diversity and inclusion in culinary arts. Engaging with the Community Gemma continues to expand Kimochi's reach by hosting pop-up events in various locations, such as Michi Michi Bakery and Flour Atelier, further solidifying her ties within the San Diego food community. As she navigates the complexities of motherhood, balancing her entrepreneurial efforts with raising her two young children, she remains devoted to her craft and committed to fostering a community around the experience of enjoying food together. Final Thoughts: Embrace the Journey As we reflect on Gemma Matsuyama Yamada's journey, it becomes clear that her story is not just about culinary skills or business success; it embodies the essence of connection, community, and the joy of sharing experiences through food. As she captures the flavors of the Earth in her mochi, she reminds us that it’s the journey itself—filled with trials, triumphs, and shared moments—that nourishes our spirit.
