Local Surfers Shine in Scholastic Surf Series
Local surfers from Encinitas are catching waves and accolades alike as they navigate the competitive waters of the Scholastic Surf Series. At the recent meet held at the Oceanside South Jetty, surfers from The Grauer School, San Dieguito Academy (SDA), and Oak Crest Middle School demonstrated their talent and dedication, achieving remarkable placements.
Grauer School's Victory
The Grauer School's surf team showcased exceptional skill, with standout performances from senior Ella Stocker, who conquered the girls' longboard event, and sophomore Zahara Hamzeh-D’Ovidio, who excelled in shortboard. Coach Brogan O’Bryan praised the team's hard work, stating, "It's rewarding to see them place in the finals. We look forward to their continued success in upcoming meets." With their sights set on future competitions, the team is eager to maintain this momentum.
San Dieguito Academy's Championship Matchup
Meanwhile, San Dieguito Academy is working hard to defend their title as they compete for their third consecutive NSSA Interscholastic National Championship. The January 10 event at South Oceanside saw their longboard competitors winning top honors with impressive scores from Jack Chalnick and Riley Crescenzo. In girls' shortboard, Mikayla Abadie clinched first place, demonstrating the school’s powerful presence in the surf scene.
The Oak Crest Team's Resilience
At the middle school level, Oak Crest Middle School continues to ride the wave of success, having recently won their event at La Jolla Shores. Despite a rainy schedule causing delays, the enthusiasm among the young competitors remained palpable. Dylan Gruber's strong performances in both boys' shortboard and coed bodyboard continued to highlight Oak Crest’s prowess, while Haven McLean won the girls’ longboard event.
The Road Ahead: Championships and More
As the Scholastic Surf Series progresses, these teams are gearing up for critical dates on the calendar. The high school championships are scheduled for March 21-23 at Oceanside Harbor, South Jetty, while the state middle school championships will take place in Huntington Beach on April 18-19. With nationals later in the season, the journey is just beginning for these local surfers.
Building Community and Skills
The impact of the Scholastic Surf Series goes beyond competition; it fosters community, friendship, and skill-building. Surfers develop not only their athletic abilities but also resilience and teamwork — qualities that will serve them well beyond the waves. Support from parents and coaches further enhances this environment, creating a nurturing space for young athletes to thrive.
Whether they are catching waves or facing challenges, local surfers in Encinitas demonstrate that hard work and determination can lead to great success in any field. As they prepare for upcoming competitions, the excitement continues to build, not just for them but for the entire local surfing community.
