The City of La Mesa has several sets of public stairways in the Mt. Nebo / Windsor Hills area. These stairways were installed many years ago to facilitate foot traffic through the adjacent neighborhoods Hills. These stairs are now used by many for exercise.

Stair climbing delivers benefits by improving our cardiovascular fitness. It's officially classed as a 'vigorous' form exercise and burns more calories per minute than jogging.
There are three staircases, dating from 1913, that climb the side of La Mesa’s Mount Nebo. There are three different starting locations: Windsor Drive, Canterbury Drive, and Fairview Avenue. Of the three, Canterbury is the most challenging course, with 245 steps to reach the top of Summit Drive.
Once there, the elevation is 830 feet. Downtown San Diego and the Pacific Ocean are visible to the west, Mount Helix to the east. Windsor Drive is similar to Canterbury, but shorter and shadier. Fairview Avenue offers the easiest workout at around 60 steps. The inclines are steep, so prepare to sweat.
From the intersection of Windsor Drive and Canterbury Drive, you climb a total of 245 steps, interrupted by two cross streets, to reach the top of Summit Drive. On reaching the 245th step, at Summit Drive, you're on one of La Mesa's highest knolls, elevation 830 feet. Continue by following Summit Drive about 100 yards to a second stairway descending east. Follow its 184 steps to Beverly Drive. A third, shorter stairway can be found on Fairview Avenue near Alta Lane. Ascend 44 steps, cross Pasadena Avenue, and continue via the remaining 16 steps and a paved pathway to Vista Drive. It’s only 60 steps total, but with the steep pathway it’s a good workout nonetheless!
You can circle back the easy way to your starting point via streets such as Fairview Avenue, Beverly Drive, Vista Drive, or Pasadena Avenue.
Walking Tips:
245 steps is a fair amount of steps, and it is also a great location for training for other endurance events. It is common to see other motivated individuals on weekends and weekdays climbing, running, and jumping the steps from top to bottom and bottom to top over and over again. Finally, it is important to note that these steps are in a residential area, and are QUITE CLOSE to innumerable private residences. Visitors and workout fanatics alike should keep this in mind when utilizing the steps, especially during the early morning hours in order to have respect for the area locals.
