In a remarkable tale of survival and care, a juvenile brown pelican recently found a new lease on life after being blown off course by monsoonal winds. This courageous bird, originally from the coastal swamps, ended up facing the harsh realities of the Arizona desert. Burned feet from scorching asphalt and an uncertain fate could not deter its spirit.
From Arizona Asphalt to La Jolla Cove: A Rescue Mission
The brown pelican's journey began in July when it was swept away from its ocean habitat and landed in Gilbert, Arizona. There, the bird suffered severe injuries, with its feet burned from landing on hot surfaces. Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of Liberty Wildlife in Phoenix, the pelican was rescued and stabilized, before being transferred to SeaWorld San Diego for rehabilitation.
In a meticulously coordinated effort, submerged in an intense summer heat, wildlife professionals met in a Yuma parking lot to transfer the bird. After spending over a month in care, receiving essential treatments including daily Epsom salt soaks, this resilient seabird was at long last ready for release back into its natural surroundings.

Jeni Smith, SeaWorld’s rescue curator, expressed immense gratitude upon witnessing the bird take its first flight over La Jolla Cove on September 19. “The collaboration between rescue teams showcases how dedicated wildlife professionals can make a significant difference, even if it means crossing state lines,” she noted. While the brown pelican is no longer endangered, it once faced a drastic decline due to factors like pesticide use affecting its reproductive capabilities. Thankfully, following environmental protections and community efforts, they have made a commendable comeback since being removed from the endangered list in 2009.
